THE MASTER OF COMPLICATIONS

AN IMMERSIVE JOURNEY INTO CHAOS AND ILLUSION

The Master of Complications is a conceptually intricate project born from a simple idea — to take what seems like a straightforward story and turn it into a mind-bending narrative full of twists, illusions, and psychological complexities. The premise was inspired by a neon sign I saw on the banks of Lake Geneva proclaiming "Franck Muller, the master of complications." This idea sparked a surreal exploration of labyrinthine narratives, steeped in chaos and bizarre characters. The book's back cover sets the tone:

"Have you ever longed for an unnecessarily complex solution to a seemingly simple problem? No, neither had the hapless victims trapped within the events portrayed in the book entitled 'The Master of Complications'. These innocents entered the premises of Herr Franck Muller with apparently straightforward requests, only to be dragged into a terrifying world of violent hallucinations, rat infested tunnels, psychotic conjoined twins and evil henchmen. Indeed, it seems the authors are also victims of this curse, as they have not chosen to write or illustrate these pages. It seems possible that Franck Muller is himself the twisted puppeteer behind the words, illustrations and photographs before you. Is it Muller’s intention that this publication serves as a warning of his impenetrable control over humanity? Quite possibly. He is, after all, The Master of Complications."

The accompanying exhibition expanded this narrative, blending fiction with reality. Through Zoë Byrne’s photography and my own illustrations, we created an immersive experience that kept audiences guessing whether what they saw was real or fabricated. Objects from the photographs appeared in the exhibition, often as small details woven into the larger stories. It was a puzzle that invited multiple views and interpretations, designed to confound and intrigue.
