SLAVERY AND REPENTANCE

DESIGNING WITH RESPECT FOR A POWERFUL EXHIBITION

My friend Zak Grant, a talented portrait photographer, was invited by Liverpool Cathedral to photograph a series of portraits featuring 20 individuals from Liverpool 8’s Black community. These portraits were displayed alongside quotes from the participants, reflecting on Liverpool Cathedral’s historical connections with the transatlantic slave trade.

Zak asked me to assist with graphic design, branding, and exhibition curation. Recognising the significance of this project, I was happy to volunteer my time to help ensure that the exhibition communicated its powerful message with the respect and gravity it deserved. The design elements were thoughtfully crafted to complement the portraits and quotes, creating an immersive experience that would encourage reflection on the community’s history and the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.

The result was a thoughtfully curated exhibition that visually supported the theme of the project while maintaining a deep sense of respect for the sensitive subject matter. It was an incredibly rewarding experience to contribute to such an important and impactful project.
